Interpreting an active scientific excavation site

The La Brea Tar Pits & Museum is a world-renowned Ice Age fossil excavation site located in urban Los Angeles. Tar pits, scattered throughout the park, had very little interpretation. The challenge was to develop an exhibit that did not overpower the tar pits, but did deliver enough interpretation to pique visitors’ curiosity about the history of the pits and encourage them to explore the indoor museum.  A system of graphic panels was designed to draw attention to the excavations, encouraging visitors to take a closer look. Whimsical cut-outs in the panels heighten the visibility of the pits. Hyperreal, modern portraits by fine artist George Boorujy of the prehistoric animals served to connect the past with the present.
